Though leaves are many, the root is one;
Through all the lying days of my youth
I swayed my leaves and flowers in the sun;
Now I may wither into the truth.
Through all the lying days of my youth
I swayed my leaves and flowers in the sun;
Now I may wither into the truth.
Art is how I communicate what is beyond words. I am driven by a need to express something personal, to work out internal struggles with who I am and who I am choosing to become. My Art is a dialogue documenting my growth as a human being. My pieces reflect what I love: nature, mythology, human and organic forms. Knowledge is power, and seeking knowledge helps you discover yourself. Joseph Campbell believed, " to translate knowledge and information into experience, that seems to me the function of literature and art." It reveals deeper levels of understanding the more you pay attention. It is important to me that my work has a narrative supporting the image; it is integral to my creation of the piece. As Campbell has said, " the role of the artist as I understand it is to reveal, through the world-surfaces, the implicit forms of the soul--and the great agent to assist the artist is the myth." In using my art to express personal experience through myth, I connect with the viewer who recognizes a shared human story. Recently I have been incorporating the idea and aesthetic of Wabi-sabi into my work. I am intrigued with the beauty of imperfection and the simplicity of the play of time on organic forms. I like the idea that the weathered bark and broken pieces of wood tell a story, relay the passing of time. More and more trees and natural forms are becoming prominent in my work which is ever changing and evolving, just like me.
